Upon his father King Charles’ ascension to the throne on September 9, 2022, Prince William chose a more understated approach rather than a lavish ceremony and church service to mark the occasion, according to a royal author.
Instead of a formal event, Prince William and Princess Kate opted for a quiet visit to Anglesey and Swansea to observe the momentous occasion, diverging from the elaborate celebration Prince Charles had in 1969.
Author Robert Hardman stated in his book ‘Elizabeth II: In Private. In Public. The Inside Story’ that Prince William made the decision to forgo an investiture ceremony and church service to mark his new title, as reported by the Daily Mail.
In contrast to the elaborate investiture ceremony held for Prince Charles in 1969 at Caernarfon Castle, which was met with controversy, Prince William chose not to replicate such an event. The significant ceremony for Prince Charles was broadcast live to millions in the UK and globally, with the late-Queen presenting him with various ceremonial items.
When Prince William’s turn came to assume the title, he opted out of a similar grand investiture ceremony. A member of William’s team mentioned that it was never something he desired to do.
Having lived in Anglesey for three years after their marriage in 2011, Prince William and Kate have demonstrated their fondness for Wales over the years. In 2024, Prince William disclosed his efforts to learn Welsh using the Duolingo app and later spoke briefly in Welsh during his St David’s Day address to honor the Welsh culture and people.
