Nigel Farage engaged in a heated exchange with a journalist, challenging her to educate him on tax law after being questioned about Richard Tice’s tax situation during a press briefing. The leader of Reform UK defended his deputy, stating that Mr. Tice had indeed paid the correct amount of taxes, even suggesting that he may have slightly overpaid.
Richard Tice, who serves as Reform’s spokesperson for business, trade, and energy, is under scrutiny for allegedly failing to pay over £90,000 in taxes due to his company’s classification as a real estate investment trust (REIT).
During the press conference, a Channel 4 News reporter queried Mr. Farage about his knowledge regarding the exact sum repaid by Mr. Tice. In response, a defensive Mr. Tice sarcastically invited the journalist to offer insights on REITs and their operations.
Despite the lack of specific details on the repayments, Mr. Farage expressed confidence in Mr. Tice’s tax compliance, citing a statement from tax expert Dan Neidle. Neidle clarified that the issue was not tax evasion or avoidance but rather a case where Mr. Tice’s firm inadvertently failed to fulfill tax obligations.
Allegations suggest that Mr. Tice neglected to withhold taxes from dividends before directing them to his offshore trust, resulting in significant excess payments. The law mandates REITs to deduct a portion of dividends as withholding tax before distributing them to shareholders.
Mr. Tice’s firm reportedly violated this regulation by failing to withhold tax on dividends on multiple occasions between 2020 and 2021, leading to a substantial tax shortfall. Despite the controversy, Mr. Tice maintains that he has diligently paid taxes at the highest rate on all received dividends.
Labor’s Anna Turley has called for an investigation into Mr. Tice’s tax affairs, criticizing his perceived inconsistency in adhering to tax rules. She emphasized that Mr. Tice’s actions undermine his credibility and portray a lack of consideration for working-class citizens.
