“AI Pay Raise-Resistant Worker Ad Sparks Controversy”

Date:

An advertisement promoting an artificial intelligence (AI) worker who never requests a pay raise has faced criticism and was removed from display at Bristol Airport. The ad featured a woman with a half-human, half-robot face and text stating she is a diligent worker who will not seek a salary increase.

The controversial ad, created by Bristol-based AI company Narwhal Labs, received backlash online for seemingly endorsing wage stagnation and downplaying the impact of automation on jobs. Critics described the message as “obscene” and “truly horrible,” accusing the ad of depicting the woman in a submissive role.

Following concerns raised about the content, the advertising company at the airport decided to take down the ad. Similar ads shared by Narwhal on LinkedIn showcased the AI worker as always available, never requiring sick leave, and not needing HR support. This campaign, named ‘Autonomous AI Communications,’ aims to deploy autonomous agents across various communication channels to assist companies.

In response to the negative feedback, Narwhal Labs CEO, Luke Sartain, acknowledged the controversy, clarifying that the intention was not to be misogynistic or racist. He emphasized that the billboards featured diverse demographics, including different genders and backgrounds, to highlight the broader issue of humans versus machines in the workforce.

Sartain hoped that the ad would spark a conversation about the evolving role of humans in a world where efficiency is no longer solely human-driven. The company’s goal is to make AI technology accessible to small and medium-sized businesses, not just large enterprises. The debate surrounding AI’s impact on jobs and the future of work is crucial, especially as technology progresses rapidly and poses challenges to traditional employment models.
