“Late April Snow Alert: UK Braces for Wintry Blast”

Date:

Recent weather forecasts suggest a late surge of wintry conditions may bring snow to parts of the UK later this month, despite the prevailing mild spring temperatures in other areas.

The outlook indicates a potential for brief blizzard-like conditions to develop around Tuesday, April 22, persisting for several days, with the most extreme weather expected in northern and higher-altitude regions.

According to WXCharts, regions at highest risk of snow and blizzard conditions include parts of northern England and Scotland. These areas might see snow showers accompanied by strong winds, especially in exposed areas, leading to temporary blizzard conditions.

Temperatures in affected regions could drop significantly, with daytime highs ranging between 2C and 6C in the north during the coldest period. Overnight temperatures could dip to 0C or below, increasing the likelihood of frost and icy surfaces.

In contrast, southern areas are expected to have milder conditions, with temperatures reaching 12C to 18C, particularly in southern and western England.

The weather maps highlight a clear division, with colder air moving into the North while the South remains comparatively warmer and more stable.

This weather pattern is influenced by Atlantic systems entering from the West, while high pressure in the North-east acts as a barrier. The Met Office anticipates a mostly dry start for many areas from April 19 to April 28, with some showers in the far North-east initially. However, most regions should experience dry and sunny weather.

Looking ahead, the following week may see attempts by an Atlantic low to bring frontal systems into the UK, but high pressure in the North-east is expected to resist these advances. Consequently, much of the week is likely to have dry weather with sunny spells, although eastern coasts may feel cooler compared to western regions.

By the next weekend and beyond, there could be a shift towards more unsettled conditions with the return of rain or showers for many areas.

While short-term forecasts suggest wintry conditions in the North, the overall outlook for April remains uncertain, with intermittent periods of sun, cooler coastal conditions, and occasional unsettled weather expected.
