Pope Leo XIV reportedly strategized on how to handle Donald Trump’s social media outbursts before Trump’s controversial attack on the pontiff, according to a Vatican expert.
President Trump faced backlash for labeling the pope as “weak” after the pontiff criticized his approach to the Iran conflict. Pope Leo had condemned Trump’s aggressive language ahead of the ceasefire, where Trump threatened to “wipe out” Iranian civilization.
An expert suggested that the Vatican likely anticipated potential conflicts with Trump and had clear strategies in place. Dr. Miles Pattenden, a Catholic Church historian, emphasized the Vatican’s experience in handling such situations and their focus on maintaining the Pope’s moral authority by avoiding direct conflicts with political leaders.
While clashes between world leaders and the Pope are not uncommon, Trump’s recent criticism is a significant departure and may impact his support among key voter demographics, notably Catholics.
Dr. Pattenden noted that attacking the Pope historically has been detrimental for political leaders, given the strong emotional response from Catholic voters. Trump’s actions, including his self-portrayal as a savior figure, could also alienate other Christian groups despite his previous success with Catholic voters.
Pope Leo, unlike his predecessor Pope Francis, has been cautious in openly criticizing governmental decisions. However, he drew a line in response to Trump’s comments on the Iran conflict, asserting his moral stance and directly challenging the government’s actions.
During his recent visit to Africa, Pope Leo addressed the need to resist the influence of the wealthy elite, particularly in Cameroon. He urged the country’s leadership to combat corruption and strive for peace and justice, emphasizing the importance of breaking free from corrupt practices.
