A Lebanese family faced the threat of Israeli airstrikes while on their way to a new residence after being displaced from their village due to ongoing conflicts in the region. Samia, aged 24, had to abandon her family home recently, along with 17 other relatives, as they were informed that their village was at risk of being targeted by bombings.
Despite the declared ceasefire between Israel and Iran-supported Hezbollah in Lebanon, Samia expressed ongoing fear and anxiety. Drones persistently hovered above, instilling a sense of imminent danger, with concerns about the stability of the ceasefire agreement.
Since the beginning of the Middle East conflict, Lebanon has witnessed around 2,300 casualties, with 23 reported in Israel. Recent Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon resulted in a tragic toll of over 300 lives in just 10 minutes, marking the deadliest incident in the country since the civil war over three decades ago.
Allegations arose that the Israeli strikes predominantly affected civilians, contradicting Israel’s claims of targeting Hezbollah militants. Prime Minister of Lebanon, Nawaf Salam, condemned Israel for attacking heavily populated civilian areas and violating international laws.
Samia and her family were initially displaced in 2024 during the outbreak of hostilities following a specific date. Subsequently, they were relocated to Tripoli in northern Lebanon. However, the recent events have forced them to evacuate once again, leaving behind all possessions due to the imminent threat.
Their journey to a temporary shelter in the mountainous Matn region was filled with the harrowing sounds of bombing, prompting fears of not reaching safely. Upon arrival, they found the new accommodation inadequate for their large family, lacking essential amenities like heating and proper living space.
Living conditions in the cramped quarters took a toll on their mental well-being, causing immense stress and despair. Despite the temporary ceasefire, the unsettling presence of drones and the absence of security continued to haunt Samia and her family, emphasizing the persistent threat and lack of peaceful living conditions.
The uncertain peace agreements between Israel and Lebanon have brought some respite, allowing the family to return home. However, the underlying fear of a potential collapse of the ceasefire lingers, keeping them on edge and wary of another displacement.
