“Grieving Mother Chooses Assisted Death in Switzerland”

Date:

Today, a mother in good health is set to conclude her life at a contentious Swiss facility due to her inability to cope with the sorrow of losing her son.

Wendy Duffy, aged 56, has been granted permission for assisted death at the Pegasos clinic because she cannot bear the pain of losing her sole child, Marcus, who passed away at the age of 23 four years ago. Despite her efforts to save him when he choked on a sandwich and died, she has found no solace.

The process of Wendy’s decision to end her life has been ongoing for a year, involving financial preparation of £10,000, heartfelt letters to her dear ones, selection of her deathbed attire, and choosing the final music she will hear, which includes songs from Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars.

Recounting her grief, Wendy expressed that the loss of Marcus has left her life in turmoil, describing it as unbearable agony. She stated to the Daily Mail, “I no longer care about anything. I merely exist. I am not truly living. When Marcus passed away, a part of me died as well. On my deathbed, I will wear his T-shirt, which still carries his scent.”

“I am resolute in my decision,” she affirmed. “While it will be challenging for everyone, I am determined to proceed with my choice. I wish for a peaceful passing, and I want those around me to find happiness for me. This is my life, my decision.”

Hailing from the West Midlands and formerly employed as a caregiver, Wendy purchased a one-way ticket today, signifying her intention not to return from Pegasos, the assisted dying center that has agreed to facilitate her passing.

Upon receiving approval late last year, Wendy initiated a digital countdown on her phone and expressed her desire for a tranquil conclusion, having witnessed distressing deaths in the past. She shared her experience of a previous suicide attempt that nearly resulted in a vegetative state, emphasizing the importance of a gentle passing.

Following her cremation in Switzerland, Wendy’s ashes will be returned to her family for dispersal at her son Marcus’s memorial bench.

In the United Kingdom, the assisted dying legislation restricts access to individuals with terminal illnesses and a prognosis of six months to live, with sound mental health. Even the renowned Dignitas facility in Switzerland would have declined Wendy’s request.

However, Pegasos, as reported by the Daily Mail, accepted Wendy following a comprehensive evaluation process by a panel of experts, including psychiatrists who reviewed her medical history.

Reflecting on her final moments, Wendy expressed her only wish, stating, “I have requested that the large windows be opened, so that my spirit may soar freely.”

Wendy’s siblings are aware of her application to Pegasos, but she has refrained from disclosing the timeline to shield them emotionally, intending to inform them upon
