Recent weather maps indicate that a significant portion of the UK is set to experience a mini heatwave with temperatures reaching 22C, coinciding with a bank holiday weekend. Over 20 counties are expected to enjoy sunny weather, with temperatures peaking at 22C in certain areas. The forecast suggests that temperatures will rise steadily and peak during the upcoming May bank holiday weekend.
Although this week has been relatively dry, temperatures have been moderate, ranging from 15C in Topcliffe, North Yorkshire, to 11C in Durham. However, a shift is anticipated as most parts of the country are poised to enter a mini heatwave at the beginning of next month.
Weather maps from WXCHARTS, created on April 23 using Met Desk data, have indicated a change in temperatures with yellow and orange hues, suggesting that temperatures may exceed 20C in numerous regions. The warm spell is expected to commence at noon on Sunday, May 3, with the highest temperatures concentrated in Southeast England, particularly around Greater London, Kent, and Surrey.
Southern England is forecasted to experience highs of 20C, while the Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber are expected to see highs of 19C. The Southwest of England, including Bath, Somerset, and Bristol, is likely to witness temperatures around 18C, as per the maps.
By 6pm on May 3, temperatures are projected to increase further, with London expected to reach highs of 22C and Surrey at 21C. Residents in Essex and Kent could enjoy temperatures around 20C, while regions like Wiltshire, Berkshire, Bristol, Gloucester, and Hampshire may experience temperatures between 19C and 20C. Similarly, the Midlands might see temperatures around 20C, with Leeds in West Yorkshire reaching 20C. However, northern England is likely to have temperatures peaking at 14C, with Scotland potentially experiencing lows of 10C.
In Wales, southern areas are expected to have milder conditions with temperatures reaching 18C, while west Wales may see temperatures only climbing to 13C.
Looking ahead to 6pm on May 4, the pleasant weather conditions are set to continue across the nation. Bank holiday Monday will see temperatures around 20C in the southwest, while the Midlands will hover around 19C, as indicated by the maps.
Conversely, Scotland is expected to have temperatures reaching only 4C, and Wales is likely to have temperatures settling at about 13C. The Met Office’s long-range forecast from April 28 to May 7 suggests that high pressure will persist over or near the UK, leading to predominantly dry conditions with occasional cloud cover and sunny intervals. Temperatures are expected to remain above normal for most regions, although coastal areas may feel cooler due to light winds.
