“Measles Surge Sparks Alarm Over Vaccination Decline”

Date:

There has been a significant surge in confirmed measles cases this year, raising alarm over declining vaccination rates.

The most recent data indicates a total of 442 measles cases diagnosed through lab tests thus far in the year, highlighting a correlation between low vaccination rates and increased cases. This trend emerged following reports from the Mirror revealing the potential for unvaccinated children to be sent home from school during local outbreaks.

Dr. Vanessa Saliba, a Consultant Epidemiologist at UKHSA, expressed deep concerns about the diminishing MMR vaccine uptake over the last decade. She emphasized that areas with lower childhood vaccine uptake are susceptible to rapid measles outbreaks, reinforcing the necessity for vaccination.

Measles is an extremely contagious disease transmitted through airborne or droplet exposure, primarily from infected individuals coughing or sneezing. The infectious period extends from the onset of symptoms until four days after the appearance of the characteristic rash. In severe cases, measles can lead to fatality or result in disabilities such as blindness, deafness, and cognitive impairments due to brain inflammation.

The MMRV jab, a comprehensive childhood vaccine offered by the NHS, safeguards against measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox) in a single injection. Despite its effectiveness, vaccine uptake has declined in recent years, falling below the World Health Organization’s recommended 95% coverage target for achieving herd immunity.

Dr. Saliba reiterated the significance of the MMR or MMRV vaccine in shielding children from the severe consequences of measles, underscoring the importance of ensuring children receive both doses before commencing school. Additionally, older children and adults lacking vaccinations can catch up through their GP practice regardless of age.

Efforts to enhance vaccination coverage include streamlining the administration of the second MMRV dose during a new 18-month appointment to bolster uptake and advance elimination objectives.

In Western Europe, measles still carries a mortality rate of approximately 1 in 5,000 cases. Following a discredited 1998 report by Andrew Wakefield falsely linking the MMR vaccine to autism, MMR vaccine coverage began to decline. Despite subsequent debunking and Wakefield’s removal from the medical register, it took years for the vaccination program to recover.

Earlier this year, the World Health Organization confirmed the re-establishment of measles in the UK since 2024. Countries achieve measles elimination status when vaccination coverage exceeds 95%, a critical threshold for herd immunity.

The UK previously attained measles elimination from 2021 to 2023 before experiencing a drop in vaccination rates. Currently, UK vaccination rates are the lowest in over a decade.

Statistics from the UKHSA for England in 2024/25 reveal that 91.9% of five-year-olds received one MMR vaccine dose, maintaining the same level as the previous year but marking the lowest rate since 2010/11. Only 83.7% of five-year-olds completed both MMR doses, down from 83.9% the previous year and the lowest since 2009/10.

Some regions exhibit even lower vaccination rates, such as Enfield where 97 confirmed measles cases have been reported this year. In Enfield, only 79.3% of children received the first MMR dose, and a mere 64.3% completed the full course, leaving approximately 1,600 unprotected children.

Notably, Hackney records even lower vaccination rates, with just 58.3% of children fully protected. Although no lab-confirmed cases have been reported in Hackney this year, it had the highest number of cases in England last year.
