Two fathers who tragically lost their daughters in a devastating incident in Southport have found solace and strength in their shared passion for running, forging a deep bond akin to brotherhood as they gear up to participate in the upcoming London Marathon together.
Alice Da Silva Aguiar, aged nine, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, aged seven, along with Bebe King, aged six, lost their lives in July 2024 during a tragic attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance workshop. Last year, Sergio Aguiar and David Stancombe each ran the London Marathon independently to honor their daughters’ memories. This year, they have decided to run side by side as friends.
Reflecting on their journey, David expressed, “Last year we ran as grieving fathers, and now we are running as companions. Our shared experiences have brought us incredibly close.” Sergio dedicated his 2025 London Marathon run to raise funds for a playground at Alice’s school, while David ran for Elsie’s Story, a charity established in his daughter’s honor. For both men, running has served as a form of therapy and a poignant way to pay tribute to their beloved daughters.
In an interview with BBC Breakfast, Sergio shared, “Running has been a source of healing for me during dark days. It has been my anchor, helping me cope and move forward.” David added, “My focus is not on speed but on personal growth through running.”
The fathers emphasized the significance of running the marathon together, with Sergio describing David as a brotherly figure. David echoed the sentiment, expressing his admiration for their bond. They look forward to supporting and enjoying the race while honoring their daughters’ legacies.
