A police officer who arrived at the scene of the Salisbury nerve agent attack was holding her baby niece when she learned that she could potentially contaminate others. PC Alexandra Way and a colleague were the first responders to former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia after they were discovered collapsed in Salisbury. Initially, they thought it was a routine call due to the appearance of a possible drug overdose.
It was later revealed that Skripal and Yulia had been exposed to the lethal nerve agent novichok, which posed a fatal risk to anyone in contact with them. PC Way recounted finding the pair in the town center, noting Skripal’s unusual condition and identifying him through his driving license without understanding the full implications at the time.
Subsequently, PC Way was called back to the scene, causing distress as she realized the potential contamination issue while holding her infant niece. Skripal, a former Russian spy imprisoned for espionage and later living in Salisbury, was targeted with novichok on the doorknob of his home, leading to their hospitalization in 2018, from which they both survived.
Dr. Steve Cockcroft, who treated the Skripals upon their admission to Salisbury Hospital, initially suspected a drug overdose before the true nature of the incident was uncovered. The involvement of Russian agents and the subsequent death of Dawn Sturgess from novichok exposure added complexity to the investigation, highlighting the seriousness of the attack.
The untold story of the Salisbury Poisonings will be featured in a Channel 4 documentary airing next week, shedding light on the harrowing events that unfolded during the nerve agent attack.
