A former NATO leader has suggested that the UK should reintroduce compulsory national service as a measure to enhance the country’s security. Lord George Robertson, a former NATO secretary general, proposed a system similar to Sweden’s that would involve citizens of all ages in various roles to strengthen the nation’s resilience. He emphasized that the UK should adopt Sweden’s total defense strategy, which includes both military and civil defense responsibilities for all residents aged 16 to 70.
Lord George expressed the need for the UK to establish specific civil resilience roles akin to Sweden’s approach, highlighting the changing nature of threats facing the country. While acknowledging the absence of such measures in upcoming government speeches, he stressed the importance of incorporating such ideas into national security discussions.
Sweden prioritizes the dual roles of military and civil defense, with protecting the population as a key focus. Citizens are expected to be prepared for potential emergencies, such as power outages, ensuring access to essential resources like water and groceries for a certain period.
Historically, the UK had conscription laws that were phased out after World War II, with the last conscripted serviceman leaving the armed forces in 1963. Several European nations, including Sweden, have military and civilian service programs. In response to global tensions, countries like Sweden have updated their war readiness protocols, releasing new information kits in 2024 during the conflict in Ukraine.
Ongoing global conflicts, such as those in the Middle East, along with geopolitical issues like the potential annexation of Greenland and discussions around the Falkland Islands, have contributed to heightened world tensions.
