“95-Year-Old Driver Spared Jail After Fatal Accident”

Date:

A 95-year-old driver, identified as Joan Barwick, has been spared a jail sentence after an incident outside a Tesco Express supermarket. Barwick, believed to be the oldest female driver involved in a fatal accident in Britain, was maneuvering her Vauxhall Corsa into a petrol forecourt when she collided with Linda Wareham, a 78-year-old grandmother who was walking her dog on April 17, 2025. Wareham succumbed to severe head injuries in the hospital the following day.

Barwick admitted guilt to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving and received a 16-month suspended sentence at Wolverhampton Crown Court. Prosecutors revealed that Barwick, then 94, failed to pay attention to her surroundings as she turned towards an open disabled parking space outside the Tesco Express in Oldswinford, West Midlands. The court learned that Barwick, driving at approximately 10mph, did not notice Wareham, who had the right of way on the pavement. Judge Michael Chambers KC characterized the incident as a brief lapse in concentration.

The judge highlighted that Wareham was blameless and had the expectation that Barwick would yield to her on the pavement. Barwick’s lack of attention to the road ahead resulted in the tragic collision. The court acknowledged Barwick’s clean driving record, lack of prior convictions, and her remorse for the incident. Despite being disqualified from driving for 10 years, Barwick’s sentence was suspended due to her age, remorse, and overall positive character.
