A teacher at a primary school is accused of using a camera to secretly record students in the boys’ restroom. Timothy Blamires, 33, made a virtual appearance at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court in south Melbourne, where he was denied bail due to concerns of potential evidence tampering. Blamires was apprehended last Tuesday and is facing charges of creating and possessing child exploitation material following the discovery of a camera at Kingswood Primary School in Dingley Village.
Allegedly, a janitor found a hidden camera disguised in an air freshener in the restroom, aimed towards the urinals. The janitor secured the device in a bag and left it on the principal’s desk. Blamires purportedly retrieved the camera and hid it in a drawer in the school’s sick bay. Subsequently, upon his arrest, the disguised camera was reportedly found in his possession on school grounds.
Authorities reportedly confiscated electronic gadgets such as laptops, phones, and tablets from Blamires’ residence as part of the probe. It is claimed that footage recovered from the camera depicted Blamires setting up the device and capturing children in the restroom.
Magistrate Timothy Gattuso declined to grant bail to Blamires citing concerns of potential interference with witnesses and evidence destruction. The magistrate also mentioned that Blamires provided inaccurate passwords to the police.
While Blamires’ brother offered a AU$50,000 surety for his release and proposed to supervise him to ensure compliance with bail conditions, the prosecution argued against it, citing public risk and evidence tampering concerns. Rejecting the bail plea, Mr. Gattuso highlighted the allegations of Blamires attempting to conceal the camera after its discovery by the janitor.
During the court proceedings, a mother of one of the affected students expressed the emotional turmoil she endured, emphasizing the need to witness the events firsthand for processing and understanding.
