Sharp Temperature Drop Expected Across UK, -5C in North, -1C in South

Date:

Despite reaching 26C earlier this week, the Met Office is predicting a sharp drop in temperatures, potentially falling below 0C.

Overnight on Tuesday, temperatures could plunge as low as -5C in the north and -1C in the south, with a possibility of -3C across the country on Wednesday night.

Daytime temperatures are expected to peak at 18C on Tuesday before declining to 15C on Wednesday, marking a significant shift from the recent hot weather.

Temperature anomaly maps for Tuesday indicate that many areas, including Scotland, Northern Ireland, North Wales, northern England, and eastern regions, will experience unusually low temperatures for this time of year.

The GFS weather model suggests that the highest temperature in the UK on Wednesday morning might only reach 8C, representing a considerable decrease from the previous week.

The Met Office forecasts cooler conditions from Tuesday to Thursday as northerly winds prevail across the UK, with occasional light showers expected, though fewer than the weekend.

According to the BBC forecast, Tuesday will be mostly dry with variable cloud cover, while Wednesday is likely to be cloudy with scattered showers in the north and west. Thursday may bring showers to northern and western areas, with the east experiencing drier conditions and some sunshine.

However, the Met Office anticipates a return to average temperatures later in the month. From May 7 to May 16, a mix of rain, showers, and some dry, sunny spells is expected across most places, with wetter conditions possibly more prevalent in the south and east initially before shifting northwards later in the period. After a chilly start, temperatures are forecasted to normalize later on.
