“Air Canada Flight Returns to Heathrow Due to Emergency Odour”

Date:

Passengers aboard an Air Canada flight experienced an emergency situation that prompted their return to London Heathrow. The incident occurred shortly after the plane, Flight AC853, a Boeing 777-300ER bound for Toronto, took off from Heathrow at 8.34 am on Saturday morning.

While cruising at an altitude of 34,000 feet over the Atlantic, the pilots decided to turn the plane back after emitting a 7700 emergency code at 9.30 am, nearly an hour after departure. The aircraft landed safely at Heathrow’s runway 27L at 10.02 am, with passengers disembarking at the terminal after the plane taxied to the gate. Landings on the runway were briefly halted during the operation.

Following the incident, Air Canada organized an alternative departure for the affected passengers later that morning. The airline disclosed that the decision to return to Heathrow was due to the detection of an “acrid odour,” later identified as originating from a cooling fan.

Upon landing, the airline stated, “Flight AC853 departed London for Toronto on the morning of May 2. An acrid odour was detected about 40 minutes into the flight, attributed to a cooling fan, prompting the crew to return to London as a precautionary measure.” The flight was canceled, and alternative arrangements were made for the 369 passengers without any reported injuries.

When a pilot inputs the emergency code 7700, it signals to air traffic control that the aircraft is in distress, requiring priority handling. This code serves as a general emergency alert, distinct from hijacking or radio failure situations.

In a separate incident last month, a Ryanair flight departing from London Stansted to Faro declared a mid-air emergency shortly after take-off, necessitating a diversion to Bournemouth Airport. The aircraft landed safely after the crew activated the 7700 emergency code, indicating a medical issue on board.
