A recent survey indicates that a majority of British citizens are in favor of reversing Brexit, with nearly 59% expressing willingness to re-join the European Union in a potential new Brexit referendum. The poll conducted by Deltapoll for the Mirror revealed these findings.
These results coincide with efforts by Keir Starmer to strengthen ties with the EU, as the UK Prime Minister initiated negotiations to participate in the EU’s £78 billion loan program for Ukraine amidst tensions with the White House under Donald Trump’s administration.
In response to Trump’s criticisms and threats, including the withdrawal of troops from Germany, the UK, led by Starmer, is seeking involvement in the EU loan initiative, which was recently endorsed following Viktor Orban’s defeat in the Hungarian elections.
Addressing concerns over the US’s shifting priorities, the UK PM emphasized the importance of European countries standing together to address evolving global challenges. Starmer also stressed the need for enhanced European defense and security commitments to complement existing partnerships with the US.
If the UK successfully joins the EU’s loan scheme, it could collaborate with the EU to provide essential support to Ukraine, opening opportunities for British firms to engage in defense contracts. Starmer highlighted the potential benefits for the UK, emphasizing that closer ties with Europe are in the nation’s best interest.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that the EU may request a contribution of £1 billion annually from Britain for continued access to the single market. This financial aspect adds to the ongoing discussions surrounding the UK’s evolving relationship with the EU.
The survey, conducted by Deltapoll, involved 3,353 online interviews with British adults, including respondents from Wales and Scotland, and has been weighted to mirror the overall British adult population.
