“Apathy Abounds in St Helens as Election Looms”

Date:

A local election with a “winner takes all” outcome is approaching in St Helens, yet the town appears apathetic towards it. Voters are gearing up for the polls next Thursday, with 46 out of 48 council seats in contention. Labour has maintained authority since 2010, securing 29 seats in the 2022 election, but this time faces a formidable challenge amid national uncertainties, notably from Reform UK targeting St Helens.

Historically recognized as the birthplace of the modern glass industry and supported by numerous coal mines, St Helens has undergone a transformation. The town’s landscape now reflects a decline in major industries, with a worn-out town center featuring shuttered retail units replaced by vape shops, takeaways, and charity stores. The shift towards out-of-town retail parks with free parking has drawn shoppers away, while residents grapple with escalating living costs.

Perceptions of being left behind prevail in St Helens, with skepticism about any political party’s ability to reverse the downward trend. Despite ongoing regeneration efforts involving the demolition of the old Hardshaw shopping center to make way for a new market hall, hotel, homes, shops, and a transport interchange, doubts linger on the achievable outcomes.

Criticism of Labour’s complacency in taking voters’ support for granted surfaces, reflecting a general lack of interest among residents towards the upcoming election. Various locals express concerns over the town’s struggles, advocating for a more modern and compact town center to attract visitors. The challenges of revitalizing St Helens are acknowledged, emphasizing the need for investment and improved council performance.

As the election campaigns enter their final week, the competing parties face an arduous task of convincing the St Helens populace of their suitability to address the town’s pressing issues.
