Guests often overlook a crucial detail that can significantly impact their holiday experience, according to my observations from working as a hotel receptionist. In this role, I’ve encountered a wide array of requests and inquiries from guests, taking on various responsibilities such as housekeeping, porter service, waiting tables, and even assisting with event planning for proposals.
Despite our willingness to accommodate even the most unusual requests, there was one recurring mistake that guests made repeatedly. At our hotel, which featured two dining options – a casual pub and a more upscale restaurant – guests often failed to realize the necessity of making reservations for meals during their stay, despite receiving multiple reminders via email.
Frequently, guests would arrive without dinner reservations, only to be informed that both restaurants were fully booked for the weekend, leading to disappointment and occasional blame directed at the hotel staff. It is crucial for guests to understand that having a room reservation does not automatically guarantee dining reservations, as many hotel restaurants operate similarly to standalone dining establishments.
To avoid disappointment, guests should proactively book their dining reservations well in advance, especially for peak dining hours. Despite our efforts to remind guests through email communication, some still arrived assuming they could dine at their preferred time without prior arrangements, resulting in frustration for both guests and staff.
This practice of making advance reservations also extends to spa treatments, where guests are advised to schedule their treatments in advance, particularly during busy periods. Planning ahead ensures a seamless and enjoyable experience, preventing the disappointment of missing out on desired dining experiences or spa treatments during a weekend getaway.
As a former receptionist, I urge guests to plan ahead and secure any necessary reservations for meals and spa treatments to enhance their overall stay experience.
