“Amateur Historian Reunites WW2 POW’s Letters After 80 Years”

Date:

A British amateur historian recently delivered long-lost letters from a German Prisoner of War to his family, 80 years after they were penned. Josef Stoffel wrote the notes to his mother, Anna, while detained in a PoW camp in England during World War 2, but they were never sent amidst the post-war chaos.

Robbie Wilson came across the letters online and, after some investigative work, located Josef’s niece, Resi Bach, who is now 89 years old. Resi was deeply moved to finally receive her late uncle’s letters, regretting that her grandmother never had the chance to read them.

Expressing a sense of duty, Robbie stated, “When I learned more about Josef and his family, I felt a strong responsibility to reunite the letters with them.” Resi shared her joy, saying, “It is a great joy for me that my uncle’s letters have now resurfaced.”

Robbie, residing in St Neots, Cambridgeshire, enlisted the help of the mayor of Kratzenburg, the town where Anna lived, to locate Resi. Upon being contacted by Mayor Björn Seis, Resi was surprised to learn about the existence of the 80-year-old letters.

Reflecting on Josef’s life, Resi described him as a hardworking man who was well-known in Kratzenburg as ‘Dreine Öhm’, the respected elderly gentleman. She recalled how Josef, upon returning from captivity in 1978, seamlessly reintegrated into village life, becoming a loyal supporter of the local football team and a beloved figure in the community.

The letters, dated between September 1946 and January 1947, originated from Beeson House Camp near St Neots, part of a network of over 1,000 sites across Britain that housed German prisoners post-World War 2. The correspondence detailed Stoffel’s experiences of laborious work, loneliness, and a profound yearning for home that his mother would never come to know.

Amidst the aftermath of war, millions across Europe faced similar challenges of silence and displacement caused by Nazi rule. The prisoners, detained until 1947 or 1948, returned to a shattered homeland, having served a regime responsible for widespread devastation and loss of life.
