Former US President Barack Obama appeared on the Stephen Colbert Show and subtly criticized current US President Donald Trump. The interview took place on Tuesday, May 5, as Colbert is set to leave his role as the late-night host later this month.
During the show, Colbert jokingly mentioned the idea of him running for the presidency, to which Obama responded by suggesting that Colbert could potentially outperform some current political figures. Since Obama’s presidency ended in 2017, the US has been led by Donald Trump from 2017 to 2021 and Joe Biden from 2021 to 2025, with Trump currently serving his second term.
In a separate incident, Trump shared a controversial post on social media on February 5 depicting Obama and his wife in a derogatory manner. Despite backlash, Trump did not apologize and attributed the post to a staff member’s actions, defending his stance by stating, “I didn’t make a mistake.”
Just before the Colbert interview aired, Obama disclosed that tensions in his marriage with Michelle were partly due to Trump’s actions. He expressed his reluctance to be drawn back into the political limelight by Trump and acknowledged the strain it put on his relationship with Michelle, who desired more quality time together.
Obama, 64, admitted that the political spotlight had caused genuine tension in their household, frustrating his wife and leading her to wish for a more relaxed and enjoyable life together.
