A tragic incident occurred during the North West 200 qualifying session in Northern Ireland, resulting in the death of a rider. The racing was immediately halted following the crash, and organizers later confirmed the unfortunate news of the rider’s passing.
The fatal incident took place at Station corner on the NW200 course during the Superbike qualifying session. Despite prompt medical attention, the rider could not survive the injuries sustained. The family of the deceased rider has granted permission for the event to proceed but requested to withhold the rider’s identity for now.
The Coleraine and District Motor Club, responsible for organizing the races, expressed heartfelt condolences to the family and team of the deceased rider. Additionally, Road Racing Ireland conveyed its sympathies to the rider’s loved ones, friends, team, and all those affected by the tragic event.
The North West 200, held on nearly 9 miles of public roads forming a ‘Triangle’ circuit encompassing Portrush, Portstewart, and Coleraine, is a prominent outdoor sporting event in Northern Ireland, drawing approximately 100,000 attendees. This fatality marks the first at the event since the passing of Malachi Mitchell-Thomas during a Supertwins race in 2016.
In response to the incident, organizers have adjusted the schedule for Thursday evening. The roads have reopened and will be closed as scheduled at 4.45 pm, with four qualifying sessions replacing the originally planned races from 5.45 pm onwards.
