eBay has introduced a significant alteration for individuals involved in trading card transactions.
The online platform is rolling out its Authenticity Guarantee service for trading cards in the UK. Under this new system, sellers of qualifying trading cards will need to send them to eBay’s authentication facility for a physical examination conducted by the Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA).
Following the assessment, the card will be dispatched to the buyer. A distinct e-tag with a QR code will be affixed to the card’s protective packaging, allowing buyers to scan it and access information about the card’s authenticity.
The eligibility criteria for the authentication service will initially cover trading cards – such as collectible card games, sports trading cards, and non-sports cards – sold for £500 or more.
The plan is to expand the eligibility to all trading cards priced at £500 and above by June. The Authenticity Guarantee service is already in place for various categories like trainers, luxury watches, and handbags, without any additional cost to buyers.
eBay highlighted the ongoing strong demand for trading cards, citing popular brands like Pokémon and Formula 1. Notably, cards such as Charizard ex and Ancient Mew were among the most searched items in 2025, with Lando Norris ranking as the most sought-after British athlete on the platform.
The highest-priced trading card sold in the UK was a rare 1999 Pokemon 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard Base Set Holo Rare #4 BGS 9 MINT, fetching £16,500.
Adam Ireland, Vice President and General Manager of Global Collectables at eBay, emphasized the importance of trust in the collectibles market. He stated that the extension of the Authenticity Guarantee service to trading cards in the UK enhances the transaction experience for high-value card deals and marks a significant milestone for eBay’s collectibles business.
This move follows eBay’s recent acquisition of the second-hand clothing platform Depop from rival Etsy for $1.2 billion (£890 million). eBay views this acquisition as a means to target a younger demographic and achieve long-term growth.
The Depop deal is set to be finalized in the second quarter of this year, with the platform retaining its brand, name, platform, and culture. Both eBay and Depop executives expressed excitement about the collaboration and the potential for mutual growth and enhanced offerings in the consumer-to-consumer fashion space.
