“British Public Worried About Third World War”

Date:

The concern over the possibility of a third world war in the near future is widespread among the majority of British citizens.

According to a survey conducted by Deltapoll, 68% of respondents expressed worries about a potential global conflict, with 29% indicating high levels of concern and 39% feeling moderately concerned.

This apprehension is fueled by events such as Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the ongoing military actions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Furthermore, the survey revealed that there is a general unease regarding defense spending, with 42% of participants advocating for an increase in funding. Notably, more than half of Tory and Reform supporters are in favor of boosting defense expenditure, in contrast to 43% of Labour voters and 45% of Liberal Democrats.

The Prime Minister has committed to raising defense spending to 3.5% by 2035, up from the current 2.6%. However, there are calls from defense officials and MPs to accelerate this process. Opposition leader Keir Starmer is also facing pressure to release a long-delayed defense investment plan amid concerns about the country’s military capabilities. Former Labour defense secretary Lord Robertson has cautioned that the UK’s security is at risk and criticized the Treasury for its handling of defense funding.

Chair of the Defence Committee, Tan Dhesi MP, has urged government action, emphasizing that Britain is currently facing a heightened level of threat. Dhesi highlighted the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the need for substantial investment in the military to address future challenges. The Defense Committee has called for a defense spending increase to 3% of GDP before the next election and expressed concerns over the absence of a Defense Investment Plan.

Responding to these concerns, a spokesperson from the Ministry of Defence stated that the forthcoming Defense Investment Plan will outline strategies to equip the Armed Forces with the necessary resources to confront emerging threats effectively. The spokesperson emphasized the need for a modernized defense approach in the face of evolving security challenges and highlighted the substantial increase in defense spending, amounting to £270 billion in this parliamentary term alone.
