“MV Hondius Passengers Echo ‘Poop Cruise’ Ordeal at Sea”

Date:

Passengers aboard the MV Hondius, affected by the Hantavirus outbreak, are being likened to ‘captives at sea’ by a legal representative who previously handled cases from the notorious ‘Poop Cruise’ incident in 2013.

Maritime law expert Frank Spagnoletti has highlighted the growing global concern surrounding the health crisis on the cruise ship. He drew parallels to the 2013 Carnival Triumph ‘poop cruise’ disaster, where thousands of travelers were stranded in the Gulf of Mexico due to malfunctioning facilities and power outage, a situation later documented in the popular Netflix film “Trainwreck: Poop Cruise.”

Disturbing images of sewage leaks, passengers resorting to sleeping on open decks, and chaotic conditions onboard shocked the world, becoming a pivotal moment in the history of the cruise industry. The lack of air conditioning led to extreme heat and humidity inside the vessel, prompting many passengers to seek refuge on the open decks to escape the unbearable conditions.

Despite limited communication with the outside world, news of the dire situation onboard quickly spread, with viral images capturing the attention of international media outlets.

While the 2013 incident stemmed from an engine fire, Spagnoletti noted the psychological distress experienced by those on the MV Hondius bears eerie similarities to the past crisis.

In an interview with the Mirror, he emphasized the passengers’ feeling of helplessness, likening them to prisoners devoid of control over their lives. Such circumstances can lead to severe emotional and physical consequences, he explained.

Spagnoletti, who assisted in securing compensations for the ‘poop cruise’ victims, pointed out that during serious outbreaks, passengers should anticipate strict quarantine measures onboard cruise ships.

He further elaborated that cruise operators typically refer to the fine print in passenger tickets to determine travelers’ entitlements once they disembark. While additional compensation or support may be offered to prevent lengthy legal disputes, passengers should remain cautious of the terms and conditions stated in their tickets.

Illness outbreaks at sea differ legally from the Carnival Triumph disaster, Spagnoletti highlighted, as the former involves disease origins that are often harder to define compared to clear negligence by the vessel’s operator in the latter case.

Despite the challenges of pursuing legal actions against cruise lines due to contractual agreements, Spagnoletti advised passengers affected by outbreaks to preserve evidence for potential claims, emphasizing that compensation could be sought for emotional distress, even without severe illness.

Looking ahead, Spagnoletti expressed hope that incidents like the current outbreak would push the cruise industry to enhance its health and safety standards, aiming for better outcomes and greater passenger safety in the future.
