“Starmer Faces Backlash for Abandoning Ban on Hunting Trophies”

Date:

Keir Starmer is facing backlash from prominent figures and activists for abandoning the proposal to prohibit cruel hunting trophy imports following pressure from the Trump administration. Concerned campaigners have been informed that the ban, initially pledged in Labour’s 2024 manifesto, will not be included in the upcoming parliamentary session’s agenda. Recent reports revealed that Trump’s associates influenced the government to retract the ban, with the Labour administration granting 28 import permits to British trophy hunters, including permits for endangered species like elephants, giraffes, and lions.

Various celebrities and sports personalities, including Frank Bruno, Gary Numan, David Essex, Nicky Campbell, Lorraine Kelly, as well as actors like Joanna Lumley and David Harewood, have joined forces to address a letter to the Prime Minister, urging for a definitive timeline for the ban’s implementation. Dame Joanna Lumley expressed deep concern over the continued killing of magnificent animals for trophies, emphasizing that such practices are outdated and barbaric.

The issue of trophy hunting imports has been a longstanding campaign focus for this publication, with ongoing delays in implementing the ban. Despite obstacles, Environment Minister Mary Creagh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to banning hunting trophies. A spokesperson from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) reiterated the government’s dedication to introducing legislation to prohibit the import of hunting trophies from endangered species as soon as feasible.

Eduardo Goncalves, founder of the Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting, highlighted the intense lobbying efforts by the Trump administration to thwart the ban, citing substantial donations from the hunting industry to influence decision-makers. The pressure intensified with the US Interior Secretary advocating against the ban, citing economic and conservation concerns, leading to concerns about the relaxation of hunting restrictions in US national parks.

The call to action to enforce the ban on trophy hunting imports has garnered widespread support from various quarters, underscoring the urgent need to halt this inhumane practice. The persistent delays in implementing the ban have triggered disappointment and frustration among advocates and supporters, urging swift action to protect endangered wildlife.
