The parents of a young girl battling a severe heart condition are calling on families to think about the ‘gift of life’ by considering organ donation. Poppy Lambert was diagnosed with a rare heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot before she was born and underwent significant heart surgery in December at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.
Despite multiple surgeries, Poppy’s condition deteriorated, leading doctors to determine that a heart transplant is her only hope for survival. Her parents, Becca and Kevin Lambert from Cleator Moor in Cumbria, are advocating for organ donation awareness, emphasizing the potential to give a child a chance at life through such a selfless act.
Becca, who works as a donor carer with the NHS, highlighted the critical need for organ donors, especially for children like Poppy awaiting transplants. Poppy, currently reliant on life support, requires a heart transplant from a donor of similar size, which typically involves a wait of around two years.
Poppy’s journey has been marked by various medical procedures, including the use of a Berlin heart to assist her circulation. Her parents have been vocal supporters of organ donation initiatives like Max and Keira’s Law, which aims to streamline the donation process and honor the legacy of donors like Max Johnson and Keira Ball.
Barbara Cardoso, a consultant at Newcastle Hospitals, emphasized the comfort some families find in choosing organ donation as a way to help others in the face of their own loss.
