British Cruise Ship Evacuees Begin 45-Day Isolation

Date:

Twenty British citizens are commencing a 45-day self-isolation period in the United Kingdom after being evacuated from a cruise ship impacted by hantavirus. Health officials have expressed concerns that the passengers might be emotionally affected and are now quarantined at Arrowe Park Hospital in Merseyside. They were transported under police escort to self-contained flats on the hospital premises, equipped with phones to stay connected with their loved ones. Currently, none of them are displaying any symptoms of the virus.

Authorities held a press briefing to address any public apprehensions regarding the situation, emphasizing that the risk of transmission to the wider community is minimal as hantavirus differs from COVID-19 or influenza. The passengers will spend 72 hours in the flats before continuing their self-isolation for an additional 42 days in their homes.

Professor Robin May from the UK Health Security Agency confirmed that all evacuees are healthy and asymptomatic but mentioned the potential for adjustments to the isolation period based on evolving scientific advice. The outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship, which resulted in three fatalities, also affected two British nationals receiving treatment in the Netherlands and South Africa, with two others self-isolating at home after leaving the trip early.

While most hantavirus strains do not transmit among humans, the Andes strain identified in some cases from the Dutch cruise ship can. The former passengers will undergo continuous monitoring and screenings during their quarantine, with dedicated support from a specialist team to ensure their well-being.

In the event of symptoms, individuals will be transferred to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, which houses the regional Tropical and Infectious Diseases Unit. Additionally, there are two suspected cases, including a British man on Tristan da Cunha, receiving care with support from a team of British Army paratroopers and medical clinicians. The outbreak is believed to have originated from Leo Schilperoord, a 70-year-old Dutch individual who visited a landfill in Ushuaia, Argentina, for birdwatching.

The virus is primarily transmitted through inhaling aerosolized particles from rodent excreta. Leo and his wife, Mirjam, had traveled extensively in South America before joining the ill-fated cruise. Mirjam disembarked in South Africa with Leo’s body but tragically passed away shortly after due to the virus. This tragic incident has highlighted the importance of vigilance and precautionary measures to prevent further spread of the hantavirus.
