A recently elected Reform UK council member has stepped down from his position and been ousted from the party following revelations of racially insensitive content on social media, as reported by the Mirror. Stuart Prior, who was part of the group of 53 Reform members elected to Essex County Council led by Nigel Farage, also secured a seat on Rochford District Council.
Before the election, an investigation by the Mirror and Hope Not Hate uncovered Prior’s online sharing of racially charged content. Calls were made by political opponents for Reform UK to remove Prior as a candidate prior to the elections.
A spokesperson for Reform UK stated that Stuart Prior had resigned from his elected roles due to personal reasons and had his party membership revoked.
An official from Essex County Council confirmed that the successful candidate for Rayleigh West had resigned from the county council position and also from the Rochford District Council role. By-elections will be coordinated by both authorities, with details to be communicated to residents promptly.
A representative from Rochford District Council corroborated the resignations.
It was revealed that Prior had deleted an account earlier this year that had posted derogatory comments about Muslims. When questioned by the Mirror, Prior denied the accusations, claiming that the content did not align with his views. He secured victory in the Essex County Council division of Rayleigh West and also won a seat in Sweyne Park and the Grange on Rochford District Council.
Criticism was directed at Reform UK for alleged shortcomings in vetting its candidates, with accusations of a systemic failure in the party’s vetting process.
Prior faced allegations of racist and derogatory comments on various occasions, including a tweet about a “master race” and disparaging remarks about different ethnic groups. Despite the controversy, Prior denied being racist when confronted with the evidence.
Other Reform UK candidates also came under scrutiny for their controversial statements, with calls for resignations made soon after their election victories.
