The United States and Iran have encountered a new obstacle in their peace negotiations, escalating tensions towards the brink of war once again. President Donald Trump criticized Iran’s terms as unacceptable, prompting Iran to defend its stance as reasonable. The latest US proposal required Iran to commit to refraining from developing nuclear weapons and ceasing uranium enrichment, in exchange for the removal of sanctions and the release of frozen Iranian assets.
Both nations, which have enforced conflicting blockades in the Strait of Hormuz, agreed to reopen the vital waterway within 30 days of signing the agreement. Iran, in response, sought an end to all hostilities and enhanced maritime security in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz as the primary focus of initial negotiations before addressing its nuclear activities in a subsequent stage.
Iran indicated a willingness to temporarily suspend uranium enrichment but rejected the US-proposed 20-year timeframe. Additionally, Iran refused to dismantle its nuclear facilities, labeling the US demands as unreasonable while highlighting Israel’s escalated attacks on Lebanese Hezbollah.
The recent bombardment in Lebanon resulted in the deaths of 51 individuals, including two medical personnel, amid ongoing US-brokered ceasefires between Israel and Lebanon and Iran. President Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Iran’s response, deeming it unacceptable, while Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman emphasized their offer to open the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for unfreezing Iranian assets.
Despite potential disagreements over Lebanon’s inclusion in the peace agreement, Iran maintained its position, urging European countries like the UK to avoid actions that could compromise their interests. The warning extended to any intervention in the Strait of Hormuz or Persian Gulf, with Iran emphasizing responsible behavior from global nations to avoid further escalation of tensions and economic repercussions.
