The Green Party has acknowledged that its leader, Zack Polanski, may have neglected to pay the correct council tax while residing on a houseboat in London. Polanski has issued an apology following inquiries regarding whether the houseboat, located in east London, was his primary dwelling.
According to government guidelines, an individual may be responsible for council tax on a boat if it serves as their primary residence. Initially, the Green Party asserted that Polanski rented a room elsewhere where council tax was included in the rent and only used the boat occasionally. However, a spokesperson has now characterized the situation as an “unintentional mistake,” stating that Polanski has promptly taken measures to settle any outstanding tax obligations.
The Times recently noted an advertisement for the sale of the boat, with Polanski’s partner mentioning a move to a house and leaving the community behind. Reports also indicated Polanski was registered to vote near the marina, using a nearby building as a mailing address.
Tax expert Dan Neidle examined Polanski’s circumstances and emphasized that if the boat was indeed his primary residence, he or his partner should have registered for and paid council tax during that period. Conservative London Assembly member Neil Garratt has filed a formal complaint against Polanski, raising concerns about transparency regarding tax payments.
Polanski recently admitted to using an inaccurate term when claiming to have been a spokesperson for the British Red Cross. He previously made controversial remarks about hypnotherapy for breast enhancement, attributing it to a journalist’s suggestion and offering repeated apologies for the incident.
