“Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips Resigns, Dealing Blow to Starmer”

Date:

Keir Starmer faces a significant setback as Jess Phillips, the safeguarding minister, resigns, delivering a harsh blow to his leadership. In a strongly worded letter, she criticized the Prime Minister for being too hesitant in protecting children, accusing the government of dragging its feet rather than taking decisive action. The memo highlighted delays in introducing new laws to prevent children from sharing explicit images, criticizing the lack of boldness in Starmer’s approach.

Since coming into power, the Labour Party had committed to reducing violence against women and girls by half within a decade, with Phillips being a prominent advocate for this cause. Her sudden resignation poses a major challenge for the party to recover from.

Last year, Phillips faced vicious attacks from Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual, drawing praise from the PM for her efforts in supporting victims of sexual abuse. However, signs of her growing frustration with the slow pace of change have been evident for some time. Phillips, a respected figure known for her ability to garner bipartisan support for policies, has now joined over 70 Labour MPs in calling for Starmer’s resignation.

Notably, Phillips has been a close ally of Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who chaired her leadership campaign in 2020.

In her resignation letter addressed to Keir Starmer, Phillips acknowledged their collaboration on combating violence against women and girls but expressed disappointment in the lack of substantial progress. She emphasized the need for decisive action rather than mere intentions, highlighting a specific instance where urgent measures to prevent child exploitation were delayed. Phillips urged for a more proactive and assertive approach in addressing critical issues.

As the country faces important challenges, Phillips underlined the necessity for tangible actions over rhetoric, signaling her decision to step down from her ministerial role due to the leadership’s perceived lack of urgency in driving meaningful change.
