President Donald Trump lashed out at a reporter today during questioning about the progress of a new ballroom being constructed at the White House.
When asked about the expenses related to the ballroom project, the US president proudly stated that the construction was both under budget and ahead of schedule. He emphasized the need for the ballroom expansion and the efficient management of costs.
Responding to claims that the budget had been doubled from $200 million to $400 million, Trump vehemently defended his decision, asserting that he had merely doubled the size of the project. He bluntly criticized the reporter, calling them unintelligent and reiterated the insult to the journalist in close proximity.
The incident occurred as Trump was en route to Beijing for a crucial meeting with President Xi Jinping, highlighting the timing of the confrontation.
Senate Republicans recently announced plans to allocate up to $1 billion to enhance security measures for Trump’s ballroom endeavor. This proposal came in response to heightened security concerns following a recent assassination attempt on the president.
The decision to use taxpayer funds for securing the East Wing project sparked debate among Republican senators, especially after Trump had initially suggested that the project would solely rely on private donations.
While Trump estimated the construction costs to be around $400 million, security expenses had not been explicitly outlined by the White House before. Senate Majority Leader John Thune defended the substantial costs, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the president in a tumultuous global environment.
Democrats have expressed opposition to the funding plan, which was incorporated by Republicans into a spending bill that aimed to restore funding for immigration enforcement agencies, a move that Democrats had obstructed since February.
