A thief died from bleeding out after accidentally impaling himself on a fence while attempting to rob a house. The incident took place in Pretoria, South Africa, where a 54-year-old homeowner discovered the burglary in progress after his dogs alerted him to suspicious activity.
Upon investigation, the homeowner found clothing hanging on the fence and a man bleeding on his driveway. The burglar had stolen two MacBook laptops and an iPhone 14 before meeting his demise. Emergency services pronounced the intruder dead at the scene.
Following the tragic event, Captain Johan van Dyk of Tshwane district Saps announced an inquiry into the matter. The homeowner reported being woken by his barking dogs in the early hours and discovering a forced-open window before encountering the burglar outside.
Security measures like spiked fences, CCTV cameras, and private guards are common in middle to upper-class South African households due to the prevalent risk of break-ins and violent crimes against homeowners. Despite efforts to reduce crime rates, the country still faces a high burglary rate, with approximately 441.7 cases per 100,000 people reported last year.
Authorities will conduct further investigations into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the thief’s death and the attempted burglary.
