Meningitis Outbreak Claims Life in Reading

Date:

An individual has passed away, and two others are receiving medical care as a result of a meningitis outbreak in Reading, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). This incident comes after a significant outbreak in Kent earlier this year that resulted in two fatalities and multiple hospitalizations.

The UKHSA has confirmed new cases of meningitis in Reading, with one of the cases identified as meningitis B, the same strain responsible for the outbreak in Kent. Close contacts of the affected individuals are being offered antibiotics as a precautionary measure. The agency emphasized that meningitis does not easily spread, and the overall risk to the public is low.

Dr. Rachel Mearkle, a health protection consultant, expressed condolences to the student’s friends and family and reassured students and staff about the low likelihood of further cases. The agency is collaborating with partners to provide public health guidance and preventive antibiotic treatment to close contacts. The risk of widespread transmission remains minimal.

The student who succumbed to the outbreak in Reading was a student at Henley College in Oxfordshire, as confirmed by a local GP surgery. The Hart Surgery in Henley-on-Thames stated that the UKHSA is actively reaching out to those who may have been in close contact with the affected student. Individuals not contacted by the agency do not currently require treatment, and college activities can proceed as usual.

Tragically, 18-year-old student Juliette Kenny passed away on March 14 due to meningitis in Kent, just one day after showing symptoms. Juliette, a year 13 student at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Faversham, was described as healthy by her father before her sudden death. Another victim, an unnamed 21-year-old University of Kent student, also lost their life in the March outbreak.
