Family Pays Tribute to Man Killed in Great White Shark Attack

Date:

The family of a man who tragically fell victim to a great white shark attack expressed their heartfelt tribute to him, describing him as a unique and kind individual. Steven “Mattas” Mattaboni, 38, was attacked by the shark while visiting Rottnest Island, a popular Australian holiday destination near Perth, Western Australia.

Following Steven’s passing, his wife Shirene fondly remembered him as a loving father to their two young daughters, aged two and four months. She emphasized his passion for fishing and the ocean, highlighting his loyalty and generosity.

Described as a multifaceted individual, Steven was actively involved in Australian Rules Football for Kingsley Football Club. His club honored him as a cherished member, praising his genuine personality and positive impact on everyone he met.

Sergeant Michael Wear, leading the investigation on Rottnest Island, revealed that Steven’s friends witnessed the tragic incident and attempted to rescue him. Surf Life Saving WA reported the sighting of a 16ft great white shark around the time of the attack and initiated an investigation into the incident.

Rottnest Island, known for its tourism appeal in Western Australia, faced its first fatal shark attack since March the previous year. With approximately 1,300 recorded shark attacks in Australia since 1791, about 260 of them have resulted in fatalities.
