Blackpool has been identified as the city with the highest rate of violent crimes in the UK, earning it the title of the violent crime capital of Britain. According to police data, nearly 69 violent crimes were reported per 1,000 residents in Blackpool last year, indicating a significant incidence within the community. This places Blackpool well above other areas, with Westminster and Bradford following closely with rates exceeding 53 per 1,000 residents.
The cities of Middlesbrough and Manchester also experienced high rates of violent crimes, surpassing 50 incidents per 1,000 residents, highlighting the prevalence of the issue in major urban centers. In Blackpool alone, over 3,100 violent offenses resulting in injuries were recorded, along with more than 4,000 incidents where no injuries were reported. Additionally, the town logged around 2,700 cases of stalking and harassment, further contributing to its overall violent crime statistics.
Conversely, Buckinghamshire reported a significantly lower rate of just 14.3 offenses per 1,000 residents, which is less than a quarter of Blackpool’s rate. Other regions with low violence levels included Waverley, Wokingham, Richmond-on-Thames, and the Isles of Scilly.
Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Clive Grunshaw, emphasized the detrimental impact of serious violence on individuals and communities. He stressed the need for a comprehensive societal approach involving law enforcement, the justice system, healthcare services, and local authorities to address and prevent violent crimes effectively.
Blackpool, known for its high poverty rates, faces various challenges such as widespread deprivation, high unemployment rates, strained healthcare infrastructure, and the lowest life expectancy in the nation. Similarly, Bradford also grapples with severe poverty issues, ranking among the most deprived local authorities in England, with nearly half of children under 16 living in relative poverty.
A spokesperson for Lancashire Police reiterated their commitment to combatting crime in Blackpool and across the region. They assured residents of dedicated policing teams focused on community engagement, rapid response, and detective work to ensure public safety and reduce criminal activities in the area.
