“Reading Meningitis Outbreak Claims Lives: Fourth Case Confirmed”

Date:

A recent meningitis outbreak in Reading has led to the confirmation of a fourth case in a junior school pupil, following the unfortunate death of one child due to the same outbreak. The affected student is part of a group of students who contracted Meningitis B, including Lewis Waters from The Henley College in Oxfordshire, who passed away last week.

Additionally, two more individuals, both students at different schools in the area (Reading Blue Coat School and Highdown Secondary School and Sixth Form Centre), are currently undergoing treatment for the infection. Dr. Rachel Mearkle, a health protection consultant at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), confirmed the fourth case of meningococcal disease in Reading, mentioning that the affected individual, a pupil at Westwood Farm Junior School, is recovering well.

Dr. Mearkle assured that the risk to the general public is low, and this case is not related to incidents in Kent or Dorset. Tragically, Lewis Waters, a sixth form pupil, succumbed to the illness, developing sepsis and passing away within hours of feeling unwell. His father, Sean Waters, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Lewis as funny, sociable, and kind-hearted, emphasizing the irreplaceable gap his son’s absence has left in their lives.

The recent cases in Reading follow a significant outbreak in Kent earlier this year, resulting in casualties and hospitalizations. Notably, 18-year-old student Juliette Kenny lost her life just a day after exhibiting meningitis symptoms, despite being described as fit and healthy by her father, Michael Kenny. Another 21-year-old University of Kent student also fell victim to the outbreak.

Meningitis poses a risk to individuals of all ages, with babies, young children, teenagers, and university students being particularly vulnerable due to close interactions in educational settings and shared accommodations. Symptoms can manifest suddenly and may include high fever, severe headache, vomiting, confusion, drowsiness, neck stiffness, light sensitivity, cold extremities, muscle pain, and a non-fading rash under pressure.
