A former high school wrestler, 17-year-old Cain Clark, was one of the individuals involved in a tragic incident at a mosque in San Diego, California. The attack, carried out by two gunmen, resulted in the deaths of three individuals outside the Islamic Center of San Diego. The other suspect, 18-year-old Caleb Vazquez, was found deceased alongside Clark in a BMW near the mosque, both reportedly having self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Investigations revealed that Clark, who had participated in wrestling at Madison High School, had hate speech inscribed on one of the weapons used in the attack, along with anti-Islamic writings found in the suspects’ vehicle. Clark, who was attending virtual classes and set to graduate, did not physically attend the school. The incident was reported after a mother called the police about her son, who was believed to be suicidal and had gone missing with her weapons and car.
A shotgun with an “SS” sticker, referencing the Nazi Schutzstaffel, was discovered near the crime scene. The mother informed the police that her son and another person were dressed in camouflage before disappearing. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl labeled the incident as a hate crime and mentioned ongoing investigations into the circumstances leading up to it.
The tragic incident claimed the life of Amin Abdullah, a security guard at the mosque who was hailed as a hero for his actions. Parents of children who frequented the Islamic Center praised Abdullah for his bravery in protecting them. Wahl commended the guard for saving lives, noting the swift police response and the heroism displayed during the attack.
The Islamic Center of San Diego, the largest mosque in the county, houses the Al Rashid School offering courses in Arabic, Islamic studies, and the Quran for students aged five and above. The community mourns the loss of those affected by the senseless violence while seeking justice and understanding in the aftermath of the devastating event.
