More than 130 individuals are reported to have lost their lives, with over 500 suspected cases emerging in the recent Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo, as confirmed by the country’s health ministry in a startling update.
US President Donald Trump expressed his apprehension following the news that an American citizen was one of those who tested positive for the virus, indicating a growing global concern over the situation.
Samuel Roger Kamba, the Congolese minister of public health, disclosed that the affected regions have documented 513 suspected cases along with 131 fatalities. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the precise connection of these deaths to the disease.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has labeled the Ebola outbreak as a public health emergency of international significance. In response to a query about his views on the outbreak, Trump stated his general concern, acknowledging the severity of the situation and its potential global impact.
Health authorities have identified the outbreak, which was officially confirmed last Friday, as stemming from the Bundibugyo virus, a rare strain of Ebola lacking approved treatments or vaccines. Despite numerous Ebola outbreaks in Congo and Uganda, this marks only the third instance of the Bundibugyo virus being identified.
Confirmed cases have now surfaced in various locations including Bunia, Goma, Mongbwalu, Butembo, and Nyakunde. The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressed deep worry over the speed and magnitude of the epidemic and announced that the UN health agency will convene an emergency committee to provide guidance on necessary measures.
