“Energy Bills Set to Soar: £200 Annual Increase Expected”

Date:

Energy bills are expected to increase by over £200 annually for the average household starting in July, as per an upcoming update from Ofgem. Cornwall Insight forecasts a 13% surge in the Ofgem energy price cap to £1,850 for this summer, up from the current £1,641 yearly bill. The spike is primarily attributed to the Iran conflict leading to higher wholesale prices following the closure of the crucial Strait of Hormuz, a significant global oil and gas shipping route.

Notably, Cornwall Insight has cautioned about a potential escalation in concerns come October when temperatures drop and energy usage typically rises. The duration of the Middle East conflict will heavily influence price cap projections. Dr. Craig Lowrey, a principal consultant at Cornwall Insight, emphasized the potential impact of the rise on households, particularly in the colder months, suggesting targeted support for the most vulnerable may be necessary.

Ofgem is set to reveal the July price cap on May 27, which will be effective for three months. The price cap determines the maximum unit rates and standing charges instead of capping the total energy costs. It reflects the expected annual spending for a household with average energy consumption and direct debit payments.

Households on standard variable rate tariffs fall under the price cap coverage. Richard Neudegg, the director of regulation at Uswitch.com, advises consumers to explore fixed energy deals to potentially save money amidst the projected price hikes. He highlights the availability of fixed tariffs offering savings exceeding £200 compared to the anticipated price cap, underscoring the importance of taking action promptly to avoid the increase.

To find suitable fixed energy deals, individuals can leverage comparison sites by inputting their postcode to access the latest tariff information. It is advised to compare the quoted rates against the current price cap, considering any associated exit fees.
