“Teacher Denies Murder and Abuse Charges in Baby’s Death”

Date:

A teacher facing murder charges in the death of an adopted baby refuted all accusations of causing harm or sexual abuse to the child. Jamie Varley, 37, expressed his emotions while testifying in court, denying any involvement in the death of 13-month-old Preston Davey. Varley rejected claims of capturing images or videos for illicit purposes, admitting to feeling disappointment and shame over certain photos found on his phone.

Varley and his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, are accused of subjecting the adopted baby to regular sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. Varley took the stand in his defense during the trial, becoming emotional as evidence, including videos and photos of the baby, was presented in court.

Under questioning by his defense lawyer, Nick Johnson KC, Varley vehemently denied killing Preston or committing any sexual assault or harm to the child. Varley clarified that Preston, who suffered 40 injuries prior to his death, was never sexually abused during his time with them.

Varley, a former teacher, shared his journey of adoption with the court, emphasizing his joy in becoming a father and the challenges of adjusting to parenthood. He explained that his text message to his sister, mentioning “dead meat,” was a casual expression and not a reflection of any harmful intent towards Preston.

Regarding controversial photos and injuries on Preston, Varley explained them as innocent incidents, denying any deliberate harm. He also addressed concerns raised about the child’s safety in certain photos, stating they were not intended to depict inappropriate behavior.

Tragically, Preston passed away after being rushed to the hospital, with post-mortem findings pointing to airway obstruction as the cause of death. Varley maintains his innocence against all charges, including murder, assault, and cruelty to a child, while McGowan-Fazakerley denies similar accusations.

The trial proceedings were temporarily halted and scheduled to resume on Friday for further deliberation.
