Drivers are being advised to keep a specific item in their vehicles as temperatures are expected to reach 33C in some parts of the country in the upcoming days. The Met Office has predicted a prolonged period of warm weather, resembling a heatwave, during this bank holiday weekend. The high temperatures are anticipated to continue until Tuesday, gradually easing off from Wednesday onwards.
Despite the pleasant weather, motorists are being urged to be cautious while driving. Graham Conway, Managing Director at Select Car Leasing, suggests that drivers should be aware of potential dangers inside their cars and keep a particular item handy to reduce risks. He emphasizes that seat belts can pose risks during a heatwave as the metal components can become hot in direct sunlight, potentially causing burns, especially for children and pets. Conway recommends keeping a piece of cloth or a towel in the vehicle to cover the metal buckles of seat belts to prevent burns.
To stay cool in hot conditions, Conway advises drivers to cover seat belts with light-colored material and park in shaded areas. Opening doors and running the air conditioning before driving can help lower the interior temperature of the car. Additionally, using reflective window covers and turning the steering wheel to avoid direct sunlight on the top section can also help maintain a comfortable temperature inside the vehicle.
For those traveling with children or pets, it is recommended to keep journeys short, take breaks for fresh air, and ensure everyone stays hydrated. Leaving a child or pet in a hot car, even for a short time, should be avoided at all costs. In case of a burn, immediate cooling with water and proper dressing are essential. The NHS website provides detailed information on self-treating burns and when professional medical attention may be necessary.
As temperatures rise, taking precautions while driving and ensuring the well-being of passengers are crucial to staying safe and comfortable during hot weather conditions.
