Summer Travel Savings: Expert Tips to Cut Costs

Date:

As May half-term comes to an end, numerous parents are preparing for the upcoming six-week summer break and gearing up for travel arrangements. Traveling during the summer holidays tends to be more expensive for families with school-age children compared to term-time breaks, with an average increase of £388 per person. The peak season for price hikes is typically in July and August, affecting both domestic staycations and international vacations.

Despite the cost challenges, travel expert Dawn Morwood, co-director of Cheap Deals Away UK, suggests that there are strategies to reduce expenses with a bit of flexibility. By analyzing price trends from previous years, she points out that there are specific days offering better value for summer flights. Understanding the predictable patterns of the summer flight market can help families save significantly by avoiding peak pricing during school holidays in late July and early August.

Dawn emphasizes that flights are most expensive on certain dates, such as July 22, 23, and 29, where prices can surge by up to 40% on average. Shifting travel dates by a day or two can result in substantial savings. Parents are advised to check their child’s school holiday dates on GOV.UK, as some schools may have inset days that allow for early departures before prices rise.

While many parents opt to book holidays in the initial weeks of the school break, waiting until later in August can lead to great deals. The last two weeks of August, known as the ‘golden weeks,’ often see drops in flight and package holiday prices. For example, departing on August 27 instead of July 25 can save a family of four £543 on a trip to Menorca with Jet2.

Furthermore, families residing near the Scottish borders can take advantage of the variance in holiday dates between England and Scotland. Scottish schools have summer holidays from late June to mid-August, offering cheaper travel options for those flying from Scottish airports later in the summer.

Considering a term-time break, Dawn suggests early June as a favorable period with a balance of good weather and reasonable prices. However, parents should be aware of increased fines for unauthorized term-time absences, which can amount to £80 per parent per child, potentially resulting in significant penalties for families.
