Israeli strikes in Lebanon kill 32, escalate conflict

Date:

Israeli strikes in Lebanon have resulted in the deaths of 32 individuals and left 40 others wounded, marking one of the most lethal offensives in the conflict and causing extensive fear among residents fleeing from the southern region.

The recent surge in violence comes after a declaration by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel would intensify its military actions against Hezbollah, leading to an increased deployment of troops into Lebanon.

Hezbollah has escalated its missile attacks on Israeli forces in northern territories, targeting civilian locations, while claiming ongoing negotiations with their backers in Tehran. Simultaneously, the Iran-supported group reported clashes with Israeli troops entering the town of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah in the south as Israel expands its ground operations.

Casualties were reported in various Lebanese areas, including 14 in Burj al-Shamali near Tyre, five in Kawthariyat al-Riz, four in Habbush, six in Maarakeh, and two in Salaa. Explosions rocked the city of Nabatieh, among 50 towns warned by Israel of imminent attacks.

Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s commitment to reinforcing its security buffer zone in northern Israel, emphasizing the strategic positioning of military forces on the ground amid the ongoing conflict.

Despite the violent clashes, both Washington and Tehran acknowledge being in the final phases of negotiating a memorandum of understanding, although significant disparities in their demands persist. The U.S. seeks an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and the release of the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran has not fully accepted the nuclear-related terms.

Tehran insists on including Lebanon and Hezbollah in any long-lasting peace deal, attributing the recent surge in Israeli assaults to this refusal. The Middle East peace efforts between Israel and Hezbollah, the U.S. and Iran, and even Israel and Hamas in Gaza have all suffered setbacks this week.

Meanwhile, in Gaza, Israel carried out a major strike killing Hamas military commander Mohammed Odeh after a prolonged pursuit. The attack resulted in the deaths of at least three Palestinians and numerous injuries in a busy market area in Gaza City.

Israeli military and intelligence agencies targeted buildings used as hideouts by Odeh following extensive surveillance over several months, with no immediate response from Hamas reported.

The recent deadly Israeli strikes on Gaza have taken place despite an existing ceasefire with Hamas since October, indicating escalating tensions in the region. Iran condemned U.S. attacks, expressing a lack of trust following recent American military actions in southern Iran.

Amid ongoing peace talks, Iranian forces warned of a robust retaliation against U.S. actions that appeared to breach a ceasefire agreement, hinting at possible broader regional consequences, raising concerns about a widening conflict in the Middle East.

The growing tensions between Israel and Tehran coincide with U.S.-Iran negotiations to enhance navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been stalled since the onset of U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on February 8.
