A lesser-known regulation has left tourists stranded on a Greek island. Holidaymakers can now be stuck at the airport overnight without a flight due to an ecological law on the island of Zakynthos, also known as Zante.
Recently, a TikTok user named NKD Zante shared a frustrating experience where a scheduled four-hour journey turned into a 24-hour ordeal due to a flight delay. This situation arose from a specific rule on Zante that can lead to unexpected travel disruptions.
Zakynthos International Airport implemented night flight restrictions in the early 1990s to protect loggerhead sea turtles that nest on the island’s beaches. These turtles, which are endangered, are sensitive to aircraft noise and light, especially during their active night period. Therefore, flights are prohibited from sunset until 7am to minimize disturbances to the turtles.
Similar conservation efforts are in place on other Greek islands to safeguard these turtles, including restrictions on beach access and reducing artificial lighting. Travel Republic advises visitors to Zakynthos to be aware of the limited night flights aimed at protecting the loggerhead turtles.
Recent delays at Zante Airport have been reported due to the implementation of the Entry/Exit System, causing extended waiting times for travelers entering the country. This highlights the ongoing challenges faced by passengers at the airport.
By prioritizing responsible tourism and environmental conservation, airlines and travel providers are aligning flight schedules with local regulations to support ecosystem preservation. Travelers are encouraged to adjust their plans accordingly when visiting Zakynthos to respect the conservation efforts in place.
