“Water Shortages Hit Britons Amid Weekend Heatwave”

Date:

Britons expecting warmer weather this weekend are facing additional challenges as South East Water urges thousands of customers to conserve water due to supply shortages in the region. Despite temperatures hovering near 30C, the water company has requested its clients to limit water usage to essential activities like drinking, washing, and cooking.

The water supply issues have caused disruptions in Kent, affecting about 3,500 customers and leading to closures of businesses and long queues at water distribution points. Matthew Dean, the company’s incident response manager, emphasized the need for water conservation as tap water is expected to be intermittent throughout the weekend in the affected area.

In Whitstable, 3,500 customers are anticipated to have their water supply restored later in the day, while in Cranbrook, 165 customers are facing a critical shortage of drinking water due to low storage tank levels. Additionally, approximately 10,500 customers in areas such as Coxheath, Loose, Headcorn, Herne Bay, and Benenden are experiencing low pressure or intermittent water supply.

Despite efforts to address the situation, high water demand during the heatwave continues to cause challenges, leading to fluctuating water availability for most customers. South East Water has delivered nearly 230,000 liters of water to vulnerable individuals and distributed bottled water to facilities like care homes, GP surgeries, pharmacies, and dental clinics.

To alleviate the water supply issues, around 340,000 bottles of water have been distributed at various locations across the county, with officials exploring new sites to set up additional water distribution points. As temperatures remain high in Kent and the southeast, with temperatures ranging from 24C to 26C on Saturday and 21C to 22C on Sunday, customers are urged to use water only for essential purposes until the situation stabilizes.

Mr. Dean expressed regret for the inconveniences caused by water interruptions and low pressure, especially during the hot weather, and assured customers that efforts are ongoing to address and prevent further issues. Despite pumping 619 million liters of water to customers on Thursday, higher than the average for this time of year, additional measures are being taken to meet the heightened demand during this period.
