An 11-year-old child underwent emergency surgery resulting in the amputation of his left leg following a shark attack near the Brazilian city of Recife. The incident took place off the coast of Jaboatao dos Guararapes. The boy’s uncle, Aldemir Jose, recounted the harrowing experience, stating that he witnessed the attack while on the beach with his nephew and daughter. He rushed into the water upon hearing a commotion and found his nephew injured but conscious, pleading for help.
After a nurse provided initial care at the scene, emergency responders transported the boy to a nearby hospital for further treatment. Reports indicated that the shark had bitten the child on the left hand and hip. The uncle later confirmed that the boy’s left leg had to be amputated due to the severity of the injuries sustained.
The beach where the attack occurred, known as Praia da Piedade or Piedade Beach, is designated as a “Shark Zone,” with warning signs posted for public safety. Danise Alves, from the State Committee for Monitoring Shark Incidents (CEMIT), highlighted specific areas where swimming is restricted due to the risk of shark attacks.
This incident marked the third shark attack in Pernambuco state this year, with previous incidents occurring in January. Over the past 34 years, there have been 83 recorded shark attacks in the state, leading to 27 fatalities. The local authorities continue to monitor and manage the risks associated with shark encounters in the region.
