“Trespassers Risk Lives at Closed Quarry Despite Fatalities”

Date:

Despite being warned by the Malvern Hills Trust about the extreme danger, individuals have persistently trespassed into a closed quarry that was shut down over a decade ago following the tragic deaths of two young men. The Trust’s chief executive, Deborah Fox, disclosed that people were defying safety precautions by breaching the fencing and even swimming in the quarry during the recent Bank Holiday weekend.

The Gullet Quarry in Worcestershire has remained off-limits since the fatalities occurred in 2013. Fox emphasized the critical nature of adhering to warnings against swimming in the quarry for personal safety, citing the perilous conditions of the site.

The incidents at the quarry, where Russell O’Neill, 17, and Justas Juzenas, 22, lost their lives in 2013, were ruled as accidental drownings by Coroner Roland Wooderson. Fox reiterated the dangers of swimming in the quarry, emphasizing the risk of cold water shock that can incapacitate even proficient swimmers and lead to drowning.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) highlighted the hazards of cold water shock and drowning during warm weather spells. The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) cautioned that sudden immersion in cold water poses risks of cold water shock, which can impact individuals regardless of their swimming abilities.

Seventeen fatalities have been confirmed in water-related incidents across the UK during the recent heatwave, with a 13-year-old girl becoming the latest victim after going missing in the River Wharfe in Yorkshire. Tragic incidents also included a woman in her 60s who perished while attempting to rescue her dog in Thornton-Cleveleys and the youngest victim, 12-year-old Junior Slater, who tragically lost his life in the River Ribble.

These unfortunate events serve as stark reminders of the perils associated with water activities during hot weather, urging the public to prioritize safety and heed warnings to prevent further tragedies.
