“Nurse’s Gift of Life: Organ Donor Legacy Lives On”

Date:

A dedicated nurse, Pauline Thornton, who spent her career at Hull University Teaching Hospitals, selflessly saved four lives through organ donation after her passing. She generously donated her heart, kidneys, and liver following a brain haemorrhage in February. To honor her legacy, hospital staff are organizing a fundraising climb on Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough for the NHS Blood and Transplant Charity and Hull Help for Refugees.

Pauline’s daughter, Claire Thornton, also a nurse in Hull, praised her mother’s lifelong kindness and the ability to continue helping others even after death. Starting her nursing journey in Hull in 1984, Pauline worked in various hospital departments before retiring in 2019 but continued to contribute as a scrub nurse at Hull Women and Children’s Hospital.

In addition to her nursing career, Pauline volunteered at Hull Help for Refugees, where she was cherished for sharing her allotment produce with colleagues. Claire expressed the hope that sharing her mother’s story would raise awareness about the importance of organ donation, emphasizing the comfort and clarity it brings to families during difficult times.

Janine Tate, a specialist nurse in organ donation at Hull United Teaching Hospitals, commended Pauline and her family for their decision to donate organs, stating that it reflected Pauline’s lifelong dedication to helping others. The Mirror’s Change the Law for Life campaign, which introduced opt-out organ donation legislation in 2020, aims to enhance organ transplantation in the UK through innovative methods like “reconditioning” organs.

Following the successful model in Spain, the UK is exploring new techniques like perfusion, pioneered in Newcastle upon Tyne, to increase the number of life-saving transplants performed annually. The opt-out system for organ donation in England, implemented in May 2020, assumes individuals as donors unless they choose to opt out, with family consent always being a priority.
